One explainable decision framework across roles and workflows
01The ambiguity

There was no map—only a mandate.

The team needed a net-new scorecard and rules-definition module, but no prior digital framework existed. Policy lived across expert judgment, legacy screens, spreadsheets, and institutional memory.

Before designing interfaces, I created shared language. Working sessions surfaced the hidden decisions, exceptions, and ownership boundaries that the product would need to make visible.

02Architecture & pivot

The flow looked finished. The logic wasn’t.

An early AI-generated flow offered speed, but not truth. It collapsed distinct decisions into a polished sequence without accounting for dependencies, governance, or the people responsible for maintaining the system.

I stopped interface production and mapped the foundational chain: a regulated score establishes risk, risk determines a grade, and only then can institution-specific rules and thresholds shape an outcome.

01

Federal scorecard

The external standard establishes the measurable risk foundation.

02

Risk grade assignment

Evidence is translated into a consistent, explainable grade.

03

Admin-defined rules & thresholds

Institutional policy governs the final decision path.

Dependency before interface
03Scalable framework

Guardrails without handcuffs.

Underwriters needed precision; sales managers needed momentum. A constraint-based input model made valid choices explicit while progressive disclosure kept complexity out of the way until it became relevant.

The resulting pattern is reusable across scorecards, products, and policy changes—giving administrators control without exposing every user to the machinery underneath.

The final experience turns complex policy into a calm, legible workflow. Every role sees what matters, every score has a reason, and every rule can evolve without redesigning the system.
